The first Bigwood was held in 2008 as a summer barbecue for staff and clients of a Lethbridge, Alberta landscaping co-operative. A sheepherders 80 year old shack on metal wheels had a wall cutout and lowered to form a stage where five local bands performed for an audience of about 50 people.

     On July 1, 2009 Bigwood was nearly flooded out but the rain stopped in time for about 80 rubber boot wearing folks to enjoy sets from 8 local acts. In 2010 Bigwood had more bands, more people and a pig roast was added thanks to generous sponsors. The fourth Bigwood, in 2011, was the best ever, with 15 local acts and a burlesque troupe providing entertainment for about 300 people. Sponsors provided catering and refreshments for the musicians and volunteers which allowed Bigwood to raise money and food donations for the local food bank.

     Bigwood has become an event that allows local musicians to play and socialize together while raising money for a good cause. Kind of a summer barbecue for co-workers who don't usually get to work together. Bigwood allows local artists to showcase their original work in a city that has few

venues that hire bands playing original music.
